What was the Icebar inspired by?
In 1596, Dutch explorer Willem Barentsz embarked on a journey to find a shorter route to the Indies. It was his third attempt at finding the route, but this time, his ship got stuck in ice near Novaya Zemlya. This meant that he and his crew had no other choice but to spend a brutal winter there. With no way to escape, they built a shelter using driftwood and lumber from the ship.
Barentsz and his 16-man crew were stranded there for months, facing constant dangers from polar bears and extreme cold. The cold was so extreme that the crew’s efforts to warm their feet by the fire were unsuccessful, as their socks would burn before they could even feel the fire’s warmth. By June 1597, in a desperate attempt for survival, the remaining crew decided to try their luck on the water. Shortly after, Barentsz died, and it took seven more weeks for the remaining crew to be rescued. Twelve men survived and finally returned to Amsterdam in November 1597.
